The original Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time was one of the best games on the N64, if not the best game ever, and now there's an unofficial PC port.

Many older gamers will remember The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time from 1998 fondly, especially for how much it demonstrated what could be done with the franchise in an open-world scenario. It has gone down in history as one of the finest video games ever made, and not only for the Nintendo 64, where it was first released. As a result, fans have been enthused about a long-running project that aimed to reverse-engineer the classic RPG for PC, and that port has now been released.

This latest version of the renowned game features upgraded HD graphics, widescreen support, and keyboard and controller compatibility. It's also reported to support modding, so it'll be fascinating to watch how the community mods this port. Modding was already being tried out before the port was ever made public. The crew just decided to replace all of the Ocarina of Time textures with Toad's face, which is both amusing and creepy.

The project was made feasible thanks to modders who spent years reverse-engineering the Ocarina of Time code. Essentially, this means that the PC port was constructed from the ground up and does not include any assets from the original game, ensuring that the developer does not receive a legal letter from Nintendo.

As if that weren't enough, there are over 20 Nintendo 64 ports in the works, including such classics as Perfect Dark, Paper Mario, Bomberman 64, and Conker's Bad Fur Day. Considering rumors that a remaster of GoldenEye 64 is in the works, it appears that now is a fantastic moment to be a gamer, with a slew of iconic games from the past making their way back into the spotlight.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is available on the Nintendo Switch, as well as the Nintendo 64, GameCube, and 3DS.
