Xbox is Thinking About Acquiring more Game Studios

As the Activision Blizzard acquisition continues, Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer suggests that Xbox is thinking more studio acquisitions.

Microsoft's proposed $68.7 billion acquisition of the Call of Duty publisher would be the largest-ever deal in the games industry, easily surpassing the $12.7 billion Take-Two and Zynga merger completed earlier this year.

Regulators are currently investigating the transaction due to concerns about potential antitrust issues during a period of increased consolidation in the gaming industry.

"I feel good about the progress that we've been making," Spencer told Bloomberg, "but I go into the process supportive of people who maybe aren't as close to the gaming industry asking good, hard questions about 'what is our intent?'" What exactly does this mean? Is this a constricting market if you look at it over five years? Is it expanding a market?'

"I've never done a deal worth 70 billion dollars, so I'm not sure what my confidence means," he added. "I will say that the discussions we've been having appear to be positive."

According to reports this week, Saudi Arabia is the first regulatory authority to approve Microsoft's proposed acquisition of Activision Blizzard.

Microsoft recently reiterated its claim that if it successfully acquires Activision Blizzard, it has no plans to make Call of Duty an Xbox exclusive.

Spencer also told Bloomberg that he expects "fewer and fewer" platform-exclusive games in the future because he believes multiplatform products are better for the industry in the long run.

Since the acquisition was announced at the beginning of the year, many Microsoft fans have speculated on when Activision Blizzard titles will join Xbox Game Pass and what game will be the first released under the Xbox umbrella after the acquisition.
