Streamer Amouranth criticizes Twitter of censorship

Twitch streamer Kaitlyn Siragusa is accusing Twitter of censorship, even though the social media platform isn't blocking content.

Twitch streamer Kaitlyn "Amouranth" Siragusa is criticizing Twitter for what she sees as censorship-like actions such as hiding content that it deems offensive. The hugely popular Twitch content creator thinks that even if the website isn't actually preventing users from seeing and sharing this content, doing so will have the same effect as outright banning it.

Siragusa used a tweet from an adult website that Twitter had hidden to support her point. Ironically, the post was hidden because it demanded an explanation from Facebook's parent company, Meta, for "unfairly" targeting particular creators for suspensions, shadow-bans, and other measures. She went on to explain her position after one of Amouranth's supporters claimed that what she was pointing to was not actually censorship.

Amouranth is knowledgeable about social media and business, and she wasn't afraid to tell the user who responded how absurd she found their response to be. She claimed the poster had "mansplained" what censorship was before stating that she had used social media to establish her brand as part of her own rebuttal.

The Twitch streamer tweeted, "Making someone change default settings IS censoring. "Favoring content in this way has a MASSIVE impact. I have this account's default settings so that I can see what is and isn't censored. She continued by saying that the amount of exposure she might receive would directly depend on whether she interacted with or retweeted posts that the social media platform had hidden. She claimed that Twitter would "throttle" her content as a form of punishment for sharing those posts.

Siragusa attempted to put an end to any arguments with her about the issue by stating that she had done extensive research on the subject. Given that she clearly understands what it takes to get a lot of views on Twitch, she appears to be a voice of authority on this subject. She said that, in addition to researching censorship, she has done extensive research on the impact of default settings and choices.

To prove once and for all that what Twitter is doing with certain types of tweets is indeed censorship, she pointed out that default settings have had a significant impact on traffic for decades. She claimed that Internet Explorer's "monster" market share had been sustained for years due to default settings. She also hinted that Google pays Apple tens of billions of dollars per year for the same reasons. It seems unlikely that the Twitch streamer's words will cause any kind of change on Twitter's part, but she is at least shedding light on the subject.
