Horizon Forbidden West Alpha Build with the Debug Menu Enabled has been leaked online

A Horizon Forbidden West alpha test build with the debug menu enabled may have leaked on a popular Playstation-focused hacking website.

The 'TestGame' file was uploaded on December 28. It didn't take long for users to realize that the file contained an entire alpha build of Horizon Forbidden West, complete with an unlockable debug menu (via Insider Gaming).

Users can now reverse-engineer Guerilla Games' proprietary Decima engine now that the build is debug-unlocked. As users experiment with Guerilla's private technology, this could have disastrous consequences for the studio. The worst-case scenario for Guerilla is that users attempt to create unofficial PC ports using the build.

Leaks like this are uncommon, especially given that Horizon Forbidden West is a current-gen triple-A title. Users may find cut content as well as hints at potential future content within the build, as with any leak.

"For people who don't know, this is not just any test game," a user wrote in a comment on the aforementioned site. Its Horizon Forbidden West, but it's an alpha version created when developers needed to send it to production so that testers could test it remotely during COVID times."

Security flaws are becoming more apparent in an industry that largely transitioned to a work-from-home model during the pandemic. The Grand Theft Auto VI leak in September, as well as this alpha build of Horizon Forbidden West, are two examples of massive leaks in 2022.

Burning Shores, an expansion for Horizon Forbidden West, was announced earlier this month at the Game Awards. Furthermore, recent job postings indicate that Guerilla Games may be working on a multiplayer mode for the game.
