Melee-Centered LTM Idea From An Apex Legends Player

Player From Apex Legends Develops Melee-Centered LTM Concept

When everyone in an Apex Legends match attacks each other using only melee and legend powers, some players might ask for a new LTM.

Following the release of a video showing 8 teams fighting it out in a ring less than a few meters in diameter while using only melee and legend powers, Apex Legends players have requested a new Limited-Time Mode (LTM). Apex Legends frequently releases limited-time modes, such as Control, Ultra Zones, or Always Be Closing, a few times per season. Each LTM adds a twist to the Battle Royale shooter that just slightly modifies the rules to keep things interesting and entertaining. In this instance, fans think an LTM for Apex Legends focused on melee and the use of legend abilities would make for a fast-paced and exciting game mode.

There have been LTMs in Apex Legends where melee weapons were the only weapons players could use, as well as LTMs where players spawned with weapons and armor, or LTMs where players don't die but reappear as shadows to aid their team. So, an LTM in Apex Legends that only allowed melee weapons isn't entirely unprecedented. Who knows, though, if a melee-only mode would be practical if the circle isn't completely condensed. In Apex Legends, punches only deal 30 damage; therefore, it would take four hits to kill an unarmored person, five hits to kill an armored person, six hits to kill an armored person, and seven hits to kill an armored person.

The video clip was posted by Reddit user johnnypricetv on the apexlegends subreddit and featured eight squads, totaling 14 players, engaging in combat inside a circle that had been reduced in size to a few meters. The players had to balance staying inside the circle to avoid ring damage and leaving the circle to avoid being punched, all while trying to use their abilities to do damage and buy time for heals. They believed that the tense play style of the match should have its own LTM. Although they were one-on-one fights, this is similar to the boxing matches that took place during the Pathfinder's Town Takeover event in season 7, but the team aspect makes brawling feel less like button mashing and calls for more strategy.

The fact that players must get within striking distance of an opponent makes the fights high stakes. It encourages everyone to remain involved in the action from the start of the match until it is over by forcing a close-quarters fight. The size of the map and how to include legends like Caustic who can create area-of-effect damage without being too powerful for the game mode are two issues an LTM using this type of battle as the focus must address in order to be properly balanced.

When players are sniped from a great distance in battle royale games, it can be frustrating because it feels like they were killed too soon before they even saw their foe. That won't be an issue in this melee-only LTM since everyone will be close to one another and attempting to sprint after players in order to punch them four to seven times without receiving a hit in return.

Apex Legends is available now on Mobile, PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
