Sonic Frontiers' free demo is now available globally on the Nintendo Switch's eShop, after previously being available only in Japan.
Sonic Frontiers will now have a free worldwide demo available for fans to try after previously being restricted to Japan-only. The latest Sonic adventure, Sonic Frontier, was released in the fourth quarter of 2022, taking the series to new heights with a semi-open world structure. With the game out for at least two months, it sold over 2.5 million copies, making it one of the franchise's best-selling games. Sega released a free demo of the game on the Nintendo Switch to celebrate the holidays.
As a "Christmas Gift" for those who were on the fence about making a purchase, Sega released this Sonic Frontiers demo near the end of 2022. This demo, which gives the player 15 minutes to explore the open-zone areas, has previously been displayed at trade shows like Gamescom and Tokyo Game Show. This demo was previously available only in Japan, but it is now available for download by anyone anywhere in the world.
Fans won't need a Japanese account to play a small portion of the game, even though the Japanese demo did have English voice tracks and subtitles. The Sonic Frontiers Switch demo enables players to compare the Switch version of the game to other consoles when moving around the open zone. It should be noted that any advancement made in the demo will not transfer to the finished product.
After a game's initial release on the eShop, a demo has previously been announced; for example, in 2021, Nintendo offered a free Metroid Dread demo for Halloween. There is no information on whether or not this digital demo will be accessible on platforms like the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One as of this writing; it is only available on the Nintendo eShop for the Switch. Sonic Frontiers' Switch version reportedly outsold all other platforms in terms of sales, especially in Japan. This may account for its exclusivity, but for now, this is just conjecture.
Sonic Frontiers is currently 30% off on the Nintendo eShop until January 15 thanks to a promotion that is listed alongside this demo. As part of a "New Year" sale, this discount is also offered on a number of other platforms and storefronts, including Steam, the PlayStation Store, and more. Sonic the Hedgehog fans have a lot to look forward to in 2023 because Sonic Frontiers will receive a ton of free updates throughout the year, with the most recent update promising new playable characters and game plot.
Sonic Frontiers is now available on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
