At first, Hogwarts Legacy was a huge hit on Steam, but it now seems that most players are switching to different titles.
Hogwarts Legacy's peak concurrent players on Steam in the last 24 hours were around 98,833 compared to the 527,652 players it had at launch, a staggering drop of 47.44% from the game's average player count over the previous month. Given the popularity of Hogwarts Legacy since its release, this may come as a surprise to some, but it makes sense when you consider the nature of the new Harry Potter action-RPG.
Hogwarts Legacy broke sales records upon release and quickly rose to the top of 2023's best-selling games list. Additionally, Hogwarts Legacy received mostly favorable reviews from critics and even broke some Twitch viewership records. Hogwarts Legacy has been a huge success for the industry by almost all measures, though some players might be perplexed as to why the game's concurrent player count has dropped so sharply since launch.
Hogwarts Legacy is a single-player game, so most players play it right away before moving on to other activities. It lacks a multiplayer element to maintain players' long-term engagement and is not a live service game like Call of Duty or Fortnite. There is nothing wrong with completing it before moving on to something else; that is how it is intended to be used. In fact, many players would prefer games to have a clear conclusion rather than being prolonged so they can play more than one game at a time.
It's really not shocking that Hogwarts Legacy has fewer concurrent players now than it did at launch because the game is exclusively single-player. In fact, gamers should expect it to fall even further in the upcoming weeks, though there will be chances for the game to climb back up the Steam charts. For instance, Hogwarts Legacy's price drop will almost certainly result in a significant increase in the number of concurrent players. Furthermore, if Hogwarts Legacy ever receives a DLC expansion, it's a safe bet that many players will return to see what it's all about.
Additionally, it should be noted that this information only applies to the Steam version of Hogwarts Legacy, so it's not the full picture. The number of concurrent players for the game on Xbox and PlayStation may not have decreased as much. They might have instead fallen even lower. In any case, since the last gen versions of Hogwarts Legacy haven't even launched yet, let alone the Switch port, console versions of the game should also see a significant increase in players later in the year.
The fact that Hogwarts Legacy is one of the most popular games of the year is undeniable, regardless of its concurrent player counts. Hogwarts Legacy may even end up being the most popular game of 2023 when all is said and done, but that is yet to be determined.
Hogwarts Legacy is out now for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X.
