This week is going to be momentous for science fiction lovers, because the new film adaptation of Frank Herbert's novel Dune is finally releasing on Friday, following a nearly year-long COVID-induced delay. Given that one of the genre's finest epics is going to be recounted for a new generation, it's unlikely that many fans will be surprised to learn that Fortnite will be getting Dune-themed content to coincide with it.

With its distinct storytelling, deep worldbuilding, and unforgettable characters, Frank Herbert's tale of many powerful factions contending for control of a particular desert planet has inspired many a reader since its first publication in 1965. With the new film version hitting cinemas and HBO Max premiering in a few days, many more people will be exposed to Dune, and it appears that Fortnite will be helping to spread awareness even further.

Hypex, one of the game's most well-known leakers, has discovered photos and in-game footage of a number of Dune-themed cosmetic items expected for Season 8 of Fortnite Chapter 2. There's a new loading screen, emote, and harvesting equipment that all depict different aspects of Dune's mythology. The most notable of these are two new character skins based on Timothee Chalamet and Zendaya's respective performances as protagonists Paul Atreides and Chani in the film.

Hypex's leaks also show Fremkit and Chani's Satchel back bling, a Sand Walk emote, an Ornithopter glider, and Maker Hooks and Twinblades pickaxes, among other cosmetics. Last but not least, there's a loading screen with Paul and Chani, as well as a Fishsticks rendition of Dune's famed sandworms. The skins, back bling, and loading screen will reportedly be separated into two bundles, with the Dune bundle having the emote, glider, and pickaxes, and the Dune Gear bundle including the emote, glider, and pickaxes.

Although Epic Games has yet to formally announce the new items, it is safe to assume that they will be added to Fortnite's ever-growing list of crossover content in the near future. The game's shop section has been added, implying that the bundles will be available tonight or tomorrow, according to Hypex. Although no release date has been specified, it's a reasonable guess that they'll be ready in time for the premiere of Dune on Friday.

While fans will have to wait a few more days to watch the movie, critics have already seen it, and most early reviews for Dune have praised director Denis Villeneuve's interpretation of the plot. If the general public shares this sentiment, it's likely that a large number of Fortnite players will wish to celebrate with the themed cosmetics.

Fortnite is available on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox One X. On October 22, Dune will be released in theaters and on HBO Max.
