The Tomb Raider Anime Will 'Unify' the Timelines of the Reboot and Original Games

The Tomb Raider Anime Will 'Unify' the Timelines of the Reboot and Original Games. Netflix Anime Series Update from Tasha Huo.

Tomb Raider

The new Tomb Raider anime will merge the franchise's various timelines into a single one. In a video posted to Netflix's official YouTube channel, Tasha Huo, the new show's writer and executive producer, revealed the series' attempt to create a unified Tomb Raider timeline. Huo explains in the video how she's working with Crystal Dynamics, the studio that took over the development of the Tomb Raider series with 2006's Tomb Raider: Legend, to create a new, singular timeline of protagonist Lara Croft's life that incorporates the events of all of the series' video games.

Earl Baylon, who played Lara's best friend Jonah in the 2013 reboot trilogy, will reprise his role in the new animated series, while Black-ish actor Allen Maldonado will voice Zip, Lara's resident tech expert from the Legend timeline.

Hayley Atwell, who played Peggy Carter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, will voice Lara in the new series, as previously announced. The series is being made to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Tomb Raider franchise, which began in 1996 with a game for the PC, the original Sony Playstation, and the Sega Saturn.

Prior to this announcement, the Tomb Raider video game storylines were divided into three distinct eras. The first timeline, which was created by series creator Toby Gard and the team at CORE Design, includes the original game and its sequels up to 2003's Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness. Following the poor critical reception of Angel of Darkness, the series was entrusted to Crystal Dynamics, which was best known at the time for Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver and their parody platforming franchise, Gex.

Crystal Dynamics rebooted the series with Tomb Raider: Legend, which retained some of the more fantastical elements of the original games while also featuring a new design for Lara Croft as well as modernized analog controls and gameplay mechanics. While Legend and its sequels received positive reviews, Crystal Dynamics decided to reboot the series in 2013 with Tomb Raider, which featured a grittier, more grounded tone and a greater emphasis on combat and stealth.

The most recent game in the series, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, was not developed by Crystal Dynamics because the studio was preoccupied with Marvel's Avengers. Eidos Montreal, on the other hand, was in charge of making that game.
