Following Microsoft's decision to release Halo Infinite's multiplayer component early, the game had over 272,000 active players on Steam yesterday.

During an Xbox 20th anniversary live stream on Monday, developer 343 Industries stated that the free-to-play multiplayer portion of Infinite will be released that day, rather than on December 8. The multiplayer feature was then made available for free on Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, the Xbox app on PC, and Steam.

Although data for the Xbox consoles and PC app have yet to be validated, SteamDB reports that the Steam version alone reached a peak of 272,586 concurrent players eight hours after its debut.

On Monday, it had the fourth-highest peak number of concurrent users, below perennial Steam favorites Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Dota 2, and PUBG Battlegrounds. It also meant it surpassed Apex Legends, Team Fortress 2, Grand Theft Auto V, and Xbox's own Forza Horizon 5.

Despite the fact that the early multiplayer launch is technically a beta, players have access to all maps and features, as well as the full Season One Battle Pass to unlock, with progress carrying over to the game's official release on December 8. Concurrent with the early multiplayer launch, Halo Infinite creative director Joseph Staten disclosed that the Season 1 Battle Pass has been extended until May 2022, a departure from 343's original plan of releasing a new season every three months.

"We decided to lengthen Season 1 to allow ourselves more time to ensure Season 2 reaches our high-quality bar and to finish production for Season 2 in a healthy and sustainable way for our team," Joseph Staten explained.

Importantly, the Season 1 extension does not just extend the original Season 1 plan. Indeed, we used this opportunity to add more events, customization options, and other content to Season 1 in order to make it a more complete experience from beginning to end.

For example, beginning today and lasting for the first week, you can log into Halo Infinite to get a free set of 20th-anniversary cosmetics. After this free reward period, our Season 1 opening event, 'Fracture: Tenrai,' will begin on November 23. This is the first of many chances to obtain the samurai-themed armor pieces and other customization items from Season 1.

Season 1 of Halo Infinite is dubbed 'Heroes of Reach,' and it includes over 100 unlockable things such as armor pieces, weapon charms, visors, coatings, emblems, and armor FX.

Microsoft previously announced that Halo Infinite's battle passes will not expire, meaning that in future seasons, players will be able to purchase both old and new battle passes and select which one to put their progress towards.
