PS Plus Promotional Language Changes, Fueling New Sony Subscription Rumors.

The advertising strategy for February's PlayStation Plus selections suggests that Sony's popular service is about to receive a change.

Subscription services appear to be the future of the gaming industry, just as they are in the tv and film industries, and everyone wants in on the fun. Now that Xbox Game Pass has been proven to be a success, everyone is watching to see how Sony responds with its PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now services. PlayStation Plus will undoubtedly continue to exist in the future, although there have been reports of new tiers on the way that will allow it to compete more directly with Game Pass.

Although Sony has yet to reveal its plans, Bloomberg has uncovered internal Sony documents that indicate a new tiered subscription model. The existing PS Plus model will be maintained, but higher tiers will be added as the platform owner seeks to improve its features and reduce the gap with Microsoft's Game Pass.

Last year, the manufacturer discounted three-month memberships to PS Now but kept the annual option at full price. It has since pulled 12-month subscription vouchers from the UK and North American stores. Undoubtedly, changes are on the way.

In addition, one intelligent PlayStation fan on Twitter noticed that Sony has changed the language on the promotional image for PlayStation Plus's February 2022 lineup. It stated that the games were only available to PlayStation Plus users in January 2022, but it is now "Available this month at no extra cost" in February. It's a minor change, but it could indicate the introduction of more subscription tiers in the future.

Microsoft's Xbox Game Pass subscription package has quickly become one of the best gaming offers, and gamers are paying attention. So far, Game Pass has amassed over 25 million subscribers, and with the addition of Bethesda and now Activision to Microsoft's first-party empire, the deal just gets better.

Although Nintendo has been seeking to make as much money as possible from its online subscriptions by selling more features and games for a higher price, despite the fact that the latest Nintendo Switch Online Expansion pack had a bumpy debut. Sony is clearly playing catch-up at this moment, and in order to compete, it will need to spring some surprises.

There's a lot of potentials for PlayStation Plus to have a successful year in 2022. Gamers demand backward compatibility, and PS3 games have been spotted on the PS5 shop, implying that PlayStation Plus will be padded with a large library of older games. Obviously, however, would not be enough to truly wow gamers.

It's a little detail, but it could support the idea that further levels will be built on top of existing PS Plus services, with more expensive levels available - akin to the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack. We looked back over a year's worth of PS Plus giveaways, and the wording has clearly changed.
