The developer of the SaGa JRPG series has hinted that a remake of one of the franchise's games may be in development this year.
The SaGa series of JRPGs is one of Square Enix's most underappreciated properties. Since its launch in 1989, it has remained a niche brand with a devoted following. The first three games in the series were renamed Final Fantasy Legend in the west to capitalize on the brand name, but the series has since established itself. These games were remastered and released as a Collection of SaGa Final Fantasy Legend on the Nintendo Switch, Steam, and mobile platforms.
Fans have also been excited about the re-release of a PS1 classic, SaGa Frontier Remastered, which will be available on many platforms in 2021. This entry featured new story paths for the protagonist as well as new HD visuals and improved fight speed. Akitoshi Kawazu, the series' inventor, said during the celebration stream for this remaster that there would be more SaGa remasters in the future. With a post on Twitter at the end of 2021, Kawazu reaffirms his statement.

Kawazu's tweet in 2021 thanked the numerous fans who have supported the SaGa series, then teased what to anticipate in 2022. According to a rough translation of the tweet, he claims that a team is working on a variety of issues so that support may continue in the new year. This tweet follows up by stating that they hope to present not only future remasters but also a remake and potentially a new game in the series.
Per Akitoshi Kawazu from Square, the SaGa team is working on a Remake, a Remaster and a new game in the series. The SaGa games have been exceeding expectations on Switch/PlayStation so I'm happy the series is continuing to be pushed. It's underrated. https://t.co/w34Z0U2glx— Stealth (@Stealth40k) December 31, 2021
This comment is in keeping with Kawazu's previous statements about future SaGa titles being remastered. SaGa Frontier 2, Romancing SaGa, and Unlimited SaGa are the three titles he stated before that were slated for remasters, each of which had a big impact on the series. There are a lot of options for what games could be rebuilt, but fans will have to wait until an official announcement is made.

This is exciting news for fans of the SaGa franchise as a whole, especially since the latest game in the series that wasn't a remaster was SaGa: Scarlet Grace, which was released in 2019. Other games launched after that were mobile or browser-based, which may not have met the expectations of the majority of fans. With SaGa's recent success on the PS4 and Switch, there's a good possibility fan will hear more about Kawazu's plans this year.
