Sony will pay $3.6 billion for Bungie Games.

Sony Interactive Entertainment today announced a $3.6 billion acquisition of Bungie, the latest in a succession of high-profile consolidation deals in the gaming business.

Bungie will become an "independent subsidiary" of SIE after the transaction is completed, led by a board of directors comprised of current CEO and chairman Pete Parsons and the remainder of the studio's present management team.

Destiny Studios will continue to be multiplatform, allowing them to "self-publish and reach gamers wherever they choose to play."

Bungie will continue to be a multiplatform studio, with the flexibility "to self-publish and reach players wherever they choose to play," according to Sony.

At the moment, the company is focused on Destiny 2, growing the Destiny franchise, and developing new IP.

"SIE president and CEO Jim Ryan said, "We've had a strong partnership with Bungie since the inception of the Destiny franchise, and I couldn't be more thrilled to officially welcome the studio to the PlayStation family."

"This is a critical step in our aim to increase PlayStation's appeal to a much bigger audience. We realize the importance of Bungie's community to the studio and look forward to assisting them as they remain free and develop. Our community, like Bungie's, is at the heart of PlayStation's DNA, and our common love for gamers and creating the finest place to play will continue to grow."

SIE, according to Parsons, backed the studio's dual goals of creating entertainment for all generations while remaining creatively independent.

"Both Bungie and SIE think that game worlds are just the start of what our IP might become," Parsons added. "With SIE's help, we'll grow Bungie into a global multimedia entertainment company dedicated to delivering on our creative vision."

The agreement brings to a close a busy January for acquisitions in the gaming business. On January 11, Take-Two announced a $12.7 billion deal to buy Zynga, and a week later, Microsoft revealed a $68.7 billion deal to buy Activision Blizzard.

Bungie would be bought for the second time by a platform owner. In June of 2000, Microsoft purchased the company, securing Halo as an exclusive title for the launch of the original Xbox in 2001.

Bungie gained control of the company shortly after the release of Halo 3 in October 2007. Before negotiating a 10-year deal with Activision that would lead to the birth of the Destiny brand, it developed two additional exclusive Halo titles for the company: Halo 3: ODST and Halo: Reach.
