Square Enix may recreate more SNES games in the 'HD-2D' format. Square Enix is reportedly considering other classic games from their 16-bit collection for 'HD-2D' remakes.

Square Enix refers to the graphic style of its Switch games Octopath Traveler and Triangle Strategy as HD-2D.

2D sprites are placed in a 3D world in this style, which is designed to mimic an 'HD' version of the SNES time.

According to Famitsu, Triangle Strategy developers stated that Square Enix president Yosuka Matsuda wants the company to employ the art style to rebuild SNES games during a new 'radio' show on Square Enix's Japanese YouTube account.

This includes a remake of the Japan-only Super Famicom title Live A Live, which was announced during the most recent Nintendo Direct, and reimagines the 16-bit original in HD-2D art style.

"We began to consider remakes of prior games because the president instructed us to make more use of HD-2D," producer Tomoya Asano remarked.

"So we compiled a list of potential titles, considered which could be done in HD-2D, and submitted them to the president."

"[The list comprised] titles published by Square and Enix for the Super Famicom – ones that were suited for HD-2D, ones that weren't, and ones that were hard to play, such as mahjong games," Asano stated.

"We lined them all up and presented the case why Live A Live was the best option." ActRaiser took second place."

ActRaiser was remastered for the Nintendo Switch in 2021. ActRaiser Renaissance also features a new art style for the game, however, it's unclear whether Square Enix considers it HD-2D or if that phrase just applies to games like Octopath Traveler, Triangle Strategy, and Living A Life living.
