To criticize Russian President Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine, a Quebec restaurant has erased the word "poutine" from its menu.

For seeking the Canadian comfort food, guests at Le Roy Jucep in Drummondville will have to settle for "la free Fromage sauce" or "fries cheese gravy."

In a Facebook post on Friday, the Quebec eatery wrote, "Dear clients and friends." "To demonstrate its extreme dismay at the situation in Ukraine, the Jucep team has elected to temporarily remove the word 'p**tine' from its trademark this evening."

According to MTL Blog, Le Roy Jucep, which claims to be the originator of poutine, removed the post after receiving threatening phone calls.

Despite the harsh comments, the restaurant stated that they are pleased that their small gesture made its way to Ukraine. The restaurant went on to say that the change was not a marketing tactic.

On Saturday, Le Roy Jucep published a clip from Radio-Canada television of a Ukrainian thanking them for the gesture on Facebook.

"It's already a triumph if we could make someone smile there!" "From the bottom of our hearts, we are with you," the eatery said in the message.

According to a 2005 New York Times column, while the Canadian greasy-spoon staple has no connection to Putin or Russia, French speakers have chosen to mispronounce the Russian leader's name because pronouncing his name as it is written in English would sound very close to "Putain," or "whore" in English.
