Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag is an action-adventure video game developed and released by Ubisoft Montreal. It is the sixth main installment in the Assassin's Creed video game franchise. Its historical timeline precedes that of Assassin's Creed III, although its modern-day sequences match that of Assassin's Creed III. Black Flag was released in October 2013 for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii U, then a month later on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Microsoft Windows. It was released in December 2019 as part of Assassin's Creed: The Rebel Collection alongside Assassin's Creed Rogue for the Nintendo Switch.

For many people, the modern-day storyline takes the focus away from the most enjoyable and engrossing historical Assassin campaign's overall mood and atmosphere. Even during the main Assassin storyline, several railroading moments slow down the action and test the player's patience. The modern-day storyline in Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag appears to have been edited down to be much shorter and less aggressive while offering the player freedom and open-world abilities as a Caribbean pirate.

The protagonist is privateer Edward Kenway, the series' most ethically challenging character to date, which is a major twist for the series. Kenway isn't even an assassin at first; he's a pirate who kills a rogue assassin and then steals his gear and name for a profit. After the positive response to Assassin's Creed III's ship sequences, Assassin's Creed IV improves the core Assassin gameplay further by having a specific focus on ship travel and battle. Assassin's Creed IV is also an excellent jumping-on point for new fans, thanks to its increased focus on open-ended gameplay and a more simplified story.
