SEGA and Microsoft Announce a Cloud-Based Next-Generation Development Alliance

Microsoft and Sega are looking into forming a strategic partnership for Azure and next-generation game development. Sega has announced a "strategic alliance" with Microsoft, in which the Japanese gaming giant will use Microsoft's Azure cloud platform to develop games.

Game development takes a long time, and some studios and developers prefer to make decisions that affect their titles years in advance. On Sunday, Microsoft and Sega announced a strategic partnership. Sega confirmed the partnership in a press release, saying that it will allow both companies to begin exploring game development using the Microsoft Azure cloud infrastructure. Sega's previously announced "Super Game" project, which is still years away from release, will benefit from this partnership.

It's nothing new for gaming companies to work together to achieve common goals. Nintendo and Microsoft have a close relationship that benefits a lot of players, such as Banjo-upcoming Kazooie's appearance in the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack. While it may appear that SEGA is being acquired by Microsoft, this is only for the development environments of both parties.

The agreement includes SEGA engaging with Microsoft and utilizing Microsoft's cloud-based Azure service to aid in the creation of future SEGA titles. SEGA has been a "tremendous partner" to Microsoft, according to the business's vice president, and the company is looking forward to "developing innovative gaming experiences leveraging Microsoft cloud technology" with its new partner, according to Windows Central.

SEGA's COO also stated in the Windows Central report that the alliance will "utilize both SEGA's powerful game development capabilities and Microsoft's cutting-edge technology" to further SEGA's game development. The use of Microsoft Azure is said to be connected to SEGA's upcoming "Super Game" project, which is set to release in a few years. While little is known about the "Super Game" at this time, it is known that it will focus on global and online communities, as well as their IPs.

"Microsoft and SEGA have agreed on the foundation for this alliance and will look to build further technological evolutions through mutual cooperation," it continued, "with areas such as network infrastructure and communication tools required for global online services being a key priority."

"Sega can also effectively adapt to diversifying work styles and potential infrastructural changes by shifting to a next-generation development platform." The announcement of the partnership doesn't explicitly state that SEGA's next few games will be exclusive to Microsoft, but it's a strong possibility. While this partnership is still in its early stages, some fans may want to prepare for titles like Sonic the Hedgehog and Super Monkey Ball to appear on the Xbox Series X/S in the coming years.

This partnership also comes on the heels of rumors that Microsoft is interested in acquiring SEGA. While those rumors were debunked, and this partnership is currently limited to allowing SEGA to develop games using Microsoft technologies, a successful partnership could lead to more collaborations in the future. It will take a few years to see what this collaboration will produce, but it should result in some exciting games from SEGA and Microsoft in the future.

Launch of Jumanji: The Video Game Enhanced Edition

There's not much else to go on right now, but given Microsoft's involvement in creating this game development environment, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S owners can expect to play these games.
