Xbox Introduces a Shiny New Aqua Shift Special Edition Series X Controller

Microsoft has announced the addition of a new color to its Xbox Series X and Series S wireless controllers. The new Aqua Shift, a prismatic and otherworldly blue controller, is the latest special edition controller for the Xbox Series of consoles.

A large part of the Xbox Series X/S branding consists of providing customers with a broad range of controller choices. The latest controller announcement expands the array of Xbox Series X/S compatible controllers. The Aqua Shift Exclusive Edition will be released on August 31 for $69.99 and will come in a special blue color with a shimmering effect.

Microsoft has made a point of how people really play games on its platforms since the Xbox One era. There's the sleek Elite Controller, which, despite a lack of aesthetic customization possibilities, is one of the best controllers ever because of its amazing design and extra buttons. Microsoft's Design Lab, which was shut down in 2020, was just reopened, allowing customers to personalize Series X controllers to their hearts' content with a plethora of colors and personalization choices. Despite the availability of this service line, it appears that Microsoft intends to sell special edition controllers as well.

Aqua Shift has a weird, color-shifting blue sheen that you have to see to believe,” according to Xbox Official. As you play with how the prismatic color flows across our controller, Aqua Shift will come to life in your hands. We are certain that this wonderful beauty will add the enchantment your controller collection demands, inspired by the creativity that gaming brings into our lives.

Microsoft announced their latest special edition controller, the Aqua Shift Special Edition, in a new Xbox Wire article. "Inspired by the imagination that gaming brings into our lives, we know this magical beauty will add that enchantment your controller collection deserves," says Will Tuttle, the Wire's Editor in Chief. The controller is styled after water, as the name implies, with every component from the buttons to the triggers being some shade of blue, including a shimmering effect over the controller's face. This is in stark contrast to earlier special edition controllers, such as the bright yellow Electric Volt, which had a simple solid matte surface on the face.

Loki Variants Each Get Their Own Unique Xbox Controller From Microsoft Design Lab

According to the Xbox, these controllers are also a first for the Xbox Special Edition controller family. Rubberized side grips on the controller handles provide a more tactile feel and a better hold on the controller. Furthermore, each controller will be one-of-a-kind since the dual-color swirl printed on the rubberized grips is unique to each controller and will never be replicated. When compared to the rest of the Xbox Series controller lineup, the Aqua Shift is obviously in a class of its own.

It seemed strange at first that Microsoft would introduce a limited edition controller after relaunching the Design Lab program. One might ask why someone would buy the Aqua Shift when they can simply use the Design Lab to design their own customized controller. The key, however, lies in the controller's unique features: the prismatic face panel and rubberized grips. Although the Design Lab allows for an infinite number of configurations, some controller capabilities are exclusive to the Aqua Shift.

Three new Xbox Series X/S controller designs were unveiled last month to coincide with the premiere of the film Space Jam: A New Legacy.

Xbox introduced two new controller colors in March: Electric Volt and Daystrike Camo.

The Electric Volt controller was inspired by the "energy and vibrance frequently observed in athletic gear and sneaker design" and included a "high-energy, yellow resin not yet seen on Xbox hardware."

Meanwhile, the Daystrike Camo Special Edition controller was the third in the Camo series, following the Night-Ops Camo and Arctic Camo controllers previously launched for Xbox One hardware.

Pre-orders for the Xbox Series X/S Aqua Shift Special Edition controller are now available for $69.99.
