Because of the Xbox and Bethesda merger, the Skyrim Special Edition is already on Game Pass, but the Anniversary Edition will cost players money.

In a somewhat confusing scenario, Bethesda has stated that The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim Anniversary Edition would not be available for free on Xbox Game Pass, as some had originally expected. With the release of Skyrim Anniversary Edition only a week ago, Bethesda has finally revealed some pricing and upgrade information.

The Anniversary Edition appears to include not only The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim Special Edition with its next-generation framerate and resolution, but also "every piece of Creation Club content released at the time of the Anniversary Edition's launch, including additional quests, armor, and gameplay modes." Upgrading from the Special Edition to the Anniversary Edition will cost players $19.99 while purchasing the Anniversary Edition alone would set you back $49.99.

However, Bethesda is throwing a bone to gamers by offering a free Xbox Series X/S update for Skyrim Special Edition on November 11, which will not require the new Anniversary version of the game. On November 11, owners of the Special Edition will also receive free Creation Club content in the form of the debut of Survival Mode and Fishing.

Some may dismiss this as a slight to the goodwill Xbox, and by extension Bethesda, have built up with gamers since their merger earlier this year, given that not only have Xbox exclusives been consistently appearing day-and-date on Game Pass, but the program also includes the majority of Bethesda's back library.

However, with the same-day upgrades to the Special Edition, it appears that Bethesda is attempting to keep gamers happy by at least providing some of the changes that the Skyrim Anniversary Edition is receiving. Still, when fans learn that all new Bethesda titles will be available on Xbox Games Pass from day one, it's difficult not to expect an Anniversary Edition like this as well.

At the end of the day, Skyrim Anniversary Edition is the way to go for players who want the full Skyrim experience or have never played Skyrim at all. If not, and they're just searching for an excuse to kill some dragons, the Special Edition's minor improvements and adjustments should satisfy.
